Teeth Grinding Treatment

Everyone clenches and grinds their teeth from time to time. Often, teeth grinding (bruxism) is the result of stress and tension. For some people, though, teeth grinding is a chronic ingrained pattern. As we often tell patients, "you're just wired that way!"  In any case, grinding can lead to head and neck pain and/or painless but brutal wearing of their teeth.

Dr. Dukes and his team have been successfully treating the painful symptoms of teeth grinding for many years at our Chesapeake dental office. We use an FDA-approved dental device that is designed to reduce teeth grinding and its symptoms. This non-surgical device, known as an occlusal splint, is designed to work with your mouth and jaw and offers rapid relief from the painful symptoms of teeth grinding and protection of your teeth.

Why Do I Grind My Teeth?

Teeth grinding can be the result of muscle tension or dysfunction of your jaw joint (temporomandibular joint, or TMJ.) Grinding and clenching can be particularly damaging if you have a misaligned dental bite.

If your dental bite is misaligned your back teeth become unbalanced, resulting in excess force being placed on one or more teeth. When this occurs, you do not bite down evenly on all teeth, and your jaw moves out of its normal position to bring the rest of your teeth together.

This unnatural movement causes abnormal wear and pressure on your teeth, putting constant, unnatural force on the jaw joint, which may lead to head and neck pain - or worse, silently and painlessly wear down you teeth are a very rapid rate.

How Can an Occlusal Splint Benefit Me?

“Occlusal” is a term that refers to the position of your teeth when you bite down. An occlusal splint is a simple, non-surgical device that we use to help eliminate the damaging effects of teeth grinding and to protect your teeth from wear and tear.

The splint is made using an acrylic resin that is designed to gently realign the jaw and/or improve the bite as it moves from front to back and side to side. It is custom-made to fit perfectly over a few teeth or all of your teeth. The splint takes stress off the joint and provides pain relief by allowing the jaw to relax into a natural position during sleep.

How Do I Know if an Occlusal Splint Will Work for Me?

If the uncomfortable symptoms of teeth grinding are disrupting your life, we urge you to contact our office. Just as importantly, many patients are rapidly wearing down their teeth with absolutely no pain but creating major future problems that could be easily managed if treated early.  We want to do everything possible to help you get the relief you need, but the only way we can determine if a splint will help you is by conducting a thorough exam.
